Happy Holidays from SLP!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world: indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead

Fourth graders filming their Public Service Announcement (PSA).

At SLP, the approach of the holidays means that students in our fall Residency Program are in the final weeks of their Action Projects. It’s thrilling to see them apply the knowledge and skills they have gained over the past few months to making a positive impact on their communities. This fall’s SLP students, ranging from 3rd to 10th graders, are producing PSAs about smoking, air pollution and food waste. They are organizing petition drives for local City Council members and Mayor DeBlasio. They are planning peer workshops to prevent both bullying and sexual harassment in their schools. Their creativity and conviction is inspiring.

And none of this would be possible without your support!  A huge thanks to those who have already contributed to our Giving Tuesday campaign.  We set a fundraising goal of $5,000, so that we could bring SLP to two public schools in the historically under-served Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brownsville and Bushwick.  So far, thanks to your incredible generosity, through both online and direct gifts, we are more than half-way towards our goal!  If you have not yet donated, please consider making a gift before December 31st.  No amount is too small- or too big!

From all of us at SLP, we wish you a healthy and peaceful New Year.
