Workshops & Events

SLP Workshops are half- or full-day sessions, designed in collaboration with our partners, to help build concrete advocacy skills. Partners can choose from the workshops listed below, or work with SLP to create a unique session.

We also can help schools, community partners, youth of all ages, neighborhood groups or community members organize a customized SLP Event to engage their peers and other community members in community action. For more information or to begin brainstorming a workshop or event, please contact us at info@servicelearningnyc.org or fill out our Partner Interest Form!

What are SLP Workshops?

1 The SLP Method (Teachers & Staff)

Ideal for schools or community organizations that are committed to integrating action civics into their curriculum or youth programming. Participants are introduced to the fundamentals of youth-led action civics and to SLP’s five phase model. Topics covered include how to ensure projects are student-driven, how to help young people of all ages make collective decisions, how to build supportive partnerships in the community, and how to ensure student actions have a real and concrete impact.

2 The Avenues of Change (Middle & High School Students)

Designed for schools that integrate community service into their curriculum, either as a requirement or otherwise, this full day workshop builds on direct service experiences to help students take concrete advocacy steps around the social problems revealed by their volunteering.

3 The Ingredients of Effective Persuasion (Teachers & Staff, Middle & High School Students, Community Members)

This half-day session focuses on how to build the most persuasive case for change. Participants will learn how to combine their passion about a social issue with convincing evidence and a call to action.

4 How to Ensure Projects are Youth-Led (Teachers & Staff)

Youth-led projects can be messy! But the benefits to the young people involved – – academic, social, and emotional- are vast. This session provides strategies for how to ensure a project is both led by youth and facilitated for success.

5 Make Your Own! (Teachers & Staff, Middle & High Students, Community Partners, Community Members)

Have an idea for a community action workshop that is not listed above? We would be happy to strategize a unique session to meet your needs.

What are SLP Events?

1 Youth-Led Evening of Action (Teachers & Staff, High School Students)

During SLP’s “Evening of Action,” high school students provide their peers with skills and knowledge needed to take concrete advocacy steps around select social issues of concern. Students may, for example, teach participants how to identify and better understand the role of their representatives; share the “ingredients of effective persuasion;” and lead participants in taking real-time advocacy actions directed at local elected officials, such as leaving voicemails, drafting emails, & engaging community members in petition drives. We can either train students in how to deliver this event, or train teachers/staff in how to support their students.

2 Voter Education & Registration Drive (Middle & High School Students; Teachers & Staff)

During an election-related event, middle or high school students raise awareness around, for example, how and where to vote, pre-registration for NYC teens, the benefits of ranked choice voting, or summaries of the roles and responsibilities of various local elected officials. We can either train students in how to deliver this event, or train teachers/staff in how to support their students.

3 Make Your Own! (Teachers & Staff, Middle & High Students, Community Partners, Community Members)

Have an idea for a community action event that is not listed above? We would be happy to strategize a unique session to meet your needs.

What are the support fees?

Fees are determined by the level of support requested, the duration of the partnership, and the number of staff participating.

“What does it take to persuade- to move people from one position to another, or to get them to care about an issue that has never stirred their interest?”
